REASONS FOR

With faster computers, more memory, high resolution graphics cards and sophisticated 3-D modelling software; new ideas and concepts can be ‘tried out’ before they are actually built, saving the company time and more importantly – money. The time-honoured phrase ‘back to the drawing board’ still holds true to this day although ‘back to the PC’ would be more apt!!

For instance, designers will use the specialist software to:-

• Develop a new car. A new concept or prototype will be created within the computer and later shown to different experts within the company who will undoubtedly have some input re. style, aerodynamics etc. The stored image can be rotated in all planes and viewed from all angles and will no doubt go through a constantly changing cycle of updates. The image can be applied with shadowing, different textures etc. to be made to look realistic. Eventually photographs may be made for advertising purposes even before it is built. Then who knows – it could be ‘back to the PC’!!

• Develop a new plane. This is one area where 3D modelling is absolutely essential. A ‘virtual plane’ can be put through its paces before it actually leaves the runway. Would you want to be the test pilot in a plane that had never actually flown before?? Nowadays it’s a lot safer profession!!

• Aid in the design of houses, shopping centres etc. If a prospective house-buyer can ‘walk-through’ the home of his or her dreams before it has even been built, think of all the advantages.
